Tea's Antioxidants and L-Theanine: What the Research Actually Shows

Much of the science behind tea health benefits centers on catechins, a family of plant antioxidants that give tea its reputation as a health-supporting drink. Green tea is especially rich in epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, the catechin most studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. A review published in July 2025 in the journal Molecules, by researchers Elena Ferrari and Valeria Naponelli at the University of Parma, examined 17 recent clinical studies covering catechin effects on cognitive function, inflammation, metabolism and drug interactions. The review concluded that the health benefits of green tea catechins generally outweigh the risks, while noting that genetic differences in how people metabolize catechins affect individual results, and that at least one trial, testing EGCG in children with Down syndrome, found no measurable cognitive improvement over placebo.

Separately, a Harvard Health review published in February 2025 points to population studies linking regular tea consumption with lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and early death, including a 2023 analysis of more than 410,000 people that associated tea drinking with as much as a 29 percent lower dementia risk. Harvard's summary is careful to note these are associations, not proof that tea itself causes the effect, since regular tea drinkers may also share other health-conscious habits.

Tea's other well-known compound, L-theanine, is an amino acid found mostly in tea leaves. A Cleveland Clinic article published in May 2026 describes early trials linking L-theanine to reduced cortisol levels and increased alpha brain wave activity associated with calm, focused attention, but its physicians caution that current evidence remains limited, built on small and short studies, and is not enough to call L-theanine a treatment for any condition.

What it means for Riyadh

Riyadh's cafe scene has expanded quickly alongside Vision 2030's Quality of Life Program, and tea-forward menus, from matcha lattes to Chinese-style milk tea, now sit next to the espresso bars that have long dominated the city. For residents deciding what goes into a cup, the antioxidant and L-theanine research offers a practical filter rather than a health claim: freshly brewed tea, prepared without heavy sugar syrup, keeps more of its natural catechin and L-theanine content than bottled or heavily sweetened tea drinks, where added sugar can offset whatever cardiometabolic benefit the tea itself may offer.

That distinction matters in a market where iced, sweetened tea has become a common order across the city's cafes, especially in summer. A shop that steeps real tea leaves and lets customers adjust sugar levels gives health-conscious residents a way to keep the parts of tea the research actually studied, rather than a diluted, heavily sweetened version of it. It is a small but real point of difference as more Riyadh cafes add tea mainly to round out an otherwise coffee-focused menu.

Background

Tea, whether green, black, oolong or white, comes from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Processing determines its chemistry: unoxidized green tea retains high levels of catechins, the antioxidant compounds studied in the Molecules review, while fully oxidized black tea converts many of those catechins into theaflavins and thearubigins during production, the compounds Harvard Health credits with black tea's darker color and fuller flavor. L-theanine survives both processes largely intact, since it is not affected by oxidation, which is why the calming amino acid appears in tea of any color and in matcha, and to a lesser extent in a few mushroom species.

Most of the evidence behind these claims still comes from laboratory work and population studies rather than large, randomized clinical trials in healthy adults. The Molecules review's authors note that genetic variation in catechin-metabolizing enzymes affects how much benefit any individual sees, and Cleveland Clinic physicians make a similar point about L-theanine, noting that small and inconsistent trials have not produced a gold-standard study on sleep or anxiety outcomes. None of the sources reviewed here recommend tea, or any single tea compound, as a treatment for a medical condition.

Takeaway

None of this makes tea a cure, and none of the researchers cited here claim otherwise. What the science does support is narrower and more useful: catechins and L-theanine are real, measurable compounds with documented antioxidant and calming properties, best preserved by drinking tea freshly brewed and lightly sweetened rather than bottled or heavily sugared. For a Riyadh resident choosing between a specialty coffee and a cup of tea, the evidence-based advantage sits less in a single miracle nutrient and more in a straightforward swap, an unsweetened brewed tea in place of a sugar-heavy drink is one of the more evidence-backed small choices on a Riyadh cafe menu.
